A Destination for All
Le Marche is a region chosen for its accessible, well-served, comfortable, and clean beaches. Families with children often seek a beach that caters to their needs and rhythms, making Numana or Marcelli their ideal destinations. Upon arrival, visitors immediately appreciate the coastline, its services, and, of course, the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
Numana and Its Hidden Treasures
Numana is a charming small town perched on the slopes of Monte Conero, overlooking the sea. It features a picturesque little harbor, bustling in summer with tourists and local fishermen selling the fresh catch of the day. The coastline of Numana includes two small bays: La Spiaggiola and Spiaggia dei Frati, both located just beyond the port. The natural continuation of Numana Bassa is the lively Marcelli.
Sirolo: A Medieval Jewel by the Sea
Neighboring Numana is Sirolo, a small medieval village nestled within the Conero Park. Its historic center sits dramatically atop a cliff, offering breathtaking views of the sea. For over twenty years, Sirolo has proudly held the European Blue Flag for the quality of its waters. Its beaches—Le Due Sorelle, San Michele, Spiaggia Urbani, and Sassi Neri—are unique, though not always easy to reach.
Exploring by Land and Sea
For those eager to discover this breathtaking territory, the adventure can begin either by land or by sea. When talking about "land" here, it means Monte Conero itself, a 572-meter-high natural wonder covered by ancient forests that offer stunning panoramic hikes. After crossing the mountain, an unassuming sign leads to the bay. Nothing extraordinary is expected—after all, it is the Mediterranean. And then… SURPRISE!
Before our eyes unfolds a natural jewel: the Baia di Portonovo, with its crystal-clear waters and pristine white pebbles known as "i sassi di Portonovo." The landscape is further enriched by historical landmarks such as the Torre De Bosis, built in 1716 by Pope Clement XI Albani, and the medieval Church of Santa Maria, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture standing majestically on the cliff.
Portonovo is not the most comfortable beach, especially for families with young children, but every native of Ancona has taken their first steps on these very stones. While the white pebbles define the bay’s distinctive charm, the true star of the region is the Mosciolo di Portonovo, a Slow Food-preserved mussel species. Do not call it just a mussel—it is a unique mollusk that naturally grows in the sea stretch between Pietralacroce (Ancona) and the Sassi Neri of Sirolo.
The Wild Beauty of Mezzavalle
The wonders of Le Marche do not end here. Just a short journey away, the landscape transforms completely, unveiling a pristine stretch of white sand: Mezzavalle.
Mezzavalle remains untouched thanks to its rugged and challenging path, which naturally selects its visitors.
For those who prefer to explore by sea, options include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, boating, or even windsurfing when the wind is favorable. As soon as one leaves the harbor, a series of spectacular formations and beaches appear: the twin sea stacks known as Le Due Sorelle, Spiaggia dei Gabbiani, Spiaggia dei Sassi Bianchi, Le Caprette del Conero, Cala Vela, and Spiaggia della Vela. From Numana to Portonovo, it is a breathtaking succession of coves, each with its own story, sometimes even featuring shipwrecks waiting to be explored, until finally reaching the wild embrace of Mezzavalle.
Practical Tips for Sea Explorers
Before embarking on a sea excursion, it is crucial to check the wind conditions—heading out with the wind at one’s back may lead to difficulties on the return journey. Alternatively, various boat services are available to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
